Boston Pride Hockey Launches Groundbreaking Inclusive Hockey League
Initiative creates first-ever LGBTQ+ hockey league in New England; winter 2022 season slated to begin in January
BOSTON, MA – Boston Pride Hockey (BPH), New England’s nonprofit LGBTQ+ hockey organization, has launched the BPH Inclusive Hockey League (IHL) — the first-ever LGBTQ+ hockey league in New England.
Officially debuting in September 2021, the IHL marks a first-of-its-kind initiative for the organization, which was founded in 1989. Building on a dynamic range of existing programs — including weekly scrimmages, skills sessions, and participation in tournaments around the world, as well as the globally-recognized Gay Games — the IHL has created opportunities for players of all skill levels to learn, compete, and appreciate the game of ice hockey alongside supporting, accepting, like-minded allies and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
“More than three decades of Boston Pride Hockey have prepared us for this moment,” said Greg Sargent, President of Boston Pride Hockey. “We believe hockey is for everyone, and the IHL is making history while forging an accepting, welcoming hockey experience that is open to all.”
“We invite anyone who brings heart, energy, and passion to join the IHL,” said Mark Tikonoff, Vice President of Boston Pride Hockey and IHL League Commissioner. “Teamwork, acceptance, and respect are at the core of each of our initiatives, and the IHL is creating a community that celebrates inclusivity, on and off the ice.”
The first games launched September 12th, kicking off the inaugural fall 2021 season which consists of four teams competing across 15 weeks of play — with an additional round of games for playoff and championship series. A winter 2022 season is slated to begin January 2nd and run for 14 weeks, with league size expanding with participation growth. As part of BPH’s mission to use the game of hockey to drive positive change and foster more inclusive communities, the IHL is open to everyone and welcomes all skill levels.
